GEICO vs State Farm: Who's Really Cheaper in California? A ZIP-by-ZIP Data Analysis

TrueFactor ResearchMarch 10, 20256 min read

Introduction

GEICO vs State Farm is one of the most common insurance comparisons drivers search for. Instead of relying on anecdotes or cherry-picked examples, we went straight to the source: SERFF regulatory rate filings. We computed premiums for both carriers at every California ZIP code using a standardized driver profile and coverage level.

The result is a ZIP-by-ZIP comparison across 1,700+ locations — not a marketing claim, but an actuarial analysis.

The Verdict

GEICO is cheaper than State Farm in 99.8% of California ZIP codes.

The median GEICO premium across all California ZIPs is $918 per 6-month term, compared to State Farm's $1,508. That's a 39% difference — or roughly $1,180 per year for the same coverage on the same vehicle.

Carrier Median 6-Mo Premium Difference
GEICO$918
State Farm$1,508+$590 (+64%)

Where the Gap Is Biggest

The Los Angeles metro area shows the widest spread. In ZIP code 90001 (South Los Angeles), GEICO charges $1,284 per 6-month term while State Farm charges $2,369 — a difference of $1,085 per term, or $2,170 per year.

Dense urban ZIP codes with higher base rates tend to amplify the gap, since State Farm's territorial factors appear to penalize high-density areas more heavily than GEICO's.

Where They're Closest

In rural areas — particularly the Central Valley and mountain communities — the gap narrows to under $400 per 6-month term. In some Sierra Nevada foothill ZIPs, the difference drops below $300.

Even in the most favorable comparison for State Farm, GEICO still comes out cheaper in virtually every ZIP code.

But Neither Is the Cheapest

Here's the surprise: despite GEICO winning the head-to-head, neither carrier is actually the cheapest option in California.

Carrier Median 6-Mo Premium
Mercury$451
Farmers$547
GEICO$918
Liberty Mutual$1,103
Allstate$1,284
State Farm$1,508

Mercury ($451 median) and Farmers ($547 median) both beat GEICO by a wide margin. The real competition isn't GEICO vs State Farm — it's Mercury and Farmers dominating on price across the state.

If you're comparing only GEICO and State Farm, you may be missing the carriers that could save you the most.

Methodology

Data extracted from SERFF regulatory rate filings filed with the California Department of Insurance. Premiums calculated for a standardized safe driver profile (35 years old, married, 17 years licensed, clean record, 12,000 miles/year) with standard 50/100/50 coverage and $500 deductibles, on a 2024 Toyota Camry LE. Comparison uses filed base rates with standard territorial and tier factors applied.
